Bullying behavior continues to be a serious issue that affects students daily. In the past few decades, there has been an increase in research on bullying as a social issue, the effects of bullying on both victims and bullies, and successful interventions to prevent bullying behavior. However, one risk factor that is especially lacking in prevention research is body weight. Despite significant attention to the medical impacts of obesity, often ignored are the negative outcomes that obese children experience as a result of stigma, bias, and discrimination. Obese children suffer psychological, social, and health-related consequences of weight bias and discrimination. Weight-based stigmatization toward obese youth is unrelenting, pervasive, and cruel. This workshop, provided by the author of The Essential Guide to Bullying: Prevention and Intervention (2012), will review weight bias as a factor in bullying, including social media and online bullying. This workshop will also review types of interventions and supports that that can address this type of prejudice in schools and best practices in resources and prevention efforts.
