Home care is purchased by the service user directly from independent home care agencies or as part of the statutory responsibility of social services departments of local authorities who either provide care by their own employees or commission services from independent agencies. Care is usually provided once or twice a day with the aim of keeping frail or disabled people healthy and independent though can extend to full-time help by a live-in nurse or professional carer. Home Instead Senior Care, a multinational network of franchises specializing in non-medical in-home care for the elderly, in support of aging in place, founded in 1994 is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. It is the largest senior care franchise in the world, with 1150 independently owned and operated offices in twelve countries.[1] Martin Jones, based in Stretton, Warrington is the Managing Director of Home Instead Senior Care in the UK.[2] He sees the company as a major provider of community-based care in line with the strategy outlined in the NHS Long Term Plan. He spoke at the Future of Care conference in London in March 2019, discussing the place of robotics in senior care.[3] In 2019 the organisation had 40 Care Quality Commission ‘outstanding’ ratings across England. This was 20% of the English network, which compared to an average 2% in the social care sector. They won the Queen's Award for Enterprise: Innovation (2016). At that time they had 56 offices and in 2019 they have 195, with about 10,500 clients and about 9,500 caregivers. [4] Jones was appointed to the board of trustees at The Silver Line in March 2019.[5] Staff are matched with clients that share their interests, and all home visits are at least an hour.[6] In April 2019 the Rugby, Warwickshire franchise was rated ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission for the second time in three years. It was assessed as being effective, caring and responsive.[7]
