The mission of the ESL Department is to provide English as a Second Language (ESL) students, from beginner to advanced levels, with the knowledge and English language skills needed to reach their academic, professional, and personal goals. ESL has four levels of academic study (Foundations, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced), and each level consists of courses in Grammar, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The student’s starting level is determined by results of a language placement test. ESL courses are primarily offered at the Main Campus in Paramus, New Jersey with some courses available at the College’s Hackensack and Lyndhurst sites. All courses are non-degree college credit and taught by professors with advanced degrees in Linguistics and Language Teaching. There are almost 1,000 ESL students in the English as a Second Language Program at BCC. The diversity of the student body is one of the program's strengths, offering a broad exposure to the cultures of the world and providing a stimulating learning environment.
