Childhood obesity is an area that Dr. Terri is passionate about. Obesity plagues so many families. Poor self-image and self-esteem are often times affected. She is committed to making a positive change in the lives of those concerned, by: discussing healthy , realistic food choices, exercise that is fun and something that the entire family can do (together),and promoting positive, affirming and encouraging conversation in order to foster a healthy self-esteem. Dr. Smith started Dr. Terri’s Fit Kids in the summer of 2010. It is a program designed to help people develop better eating habits and exercise practices with the goal of becoming healthier and happier and educated people. Moms and kids shared in that great experience. A personal trainer aided in the execution of the program. Dr. Smith participated as well. She believes in addressing psychosocial issues and looks forward to having weekly or monthly workshops in the near future that will cover topics such as: effective parenting strategies, accountability, bullying and teasing, and positive self-image, to name a few. Dr. Smith has remained connected to the youth in the community by participating in Career Day in schools across several counties and she has spoken about positive self-image, girls entering puberty and understanding changes in their bodies, and nutrition and living healthy to local Girl Scout troops and social organizations.
