In 2011, 4,521 incidents of domestic violence were reported to the police in Bergen County. The county’s Alternatives to Domestic Violence Division has made great strides in addressing this violence by creating better services for victims and violators of the law. Alternatives to Domestic Violence (ADV) is a division of the Bergen County Department of Human Services, which is exclusively devoted to domestic violence intervention. ADV offers a full range of specialized services including: Community education Counseling Court Appearance Preparation Court Accompaniment Crisis intervention Individual, group, and family counseling Information and referral to other needed services Legal advocacy and assistance Professional training Alternatives to Domestic Violence (ADV) provides services to help the victim, the abuser, and the family caught in the cycle of domestic violence.
